After the Gulf Oil Spill....?
Mexico has been fortunate that oil from the Gulf spill has not yet washed up on our beaches. Preparations are now underway on our eastern shores to deal with this eventuality. Nevertheless, because our planet is, after all, a global village, it's inevitable that Mexico will, in one way or another, not totally escape the effects of this environmental catastrophe.
But whether we are affected, or not, Mexicans share with the international community, an outrage over the human and environmental toll taken by this disaster - the consequences of which will go on for many decades. Yes, we are outraged. But, when media coverage about the Gulf oil spill fades away - then what? Do we chose to continue on as usual, changing nothing?
Let us all resolve now to do something different - to make a difference. Saving our environment is not something we can, or should, leave entirely up to others. If you live on this planet then it is your responsibility too!
And we have so many options available to help us protect our environment. It can be simple things like washing clothes in cold water and line-drying them, growing some of your own fruits and vegetables, using solar window film on your windows to keep your home cooler and reduce air conditioning use. Or, even better, use clean, renewable energy by installing solar panels to reduce your reliance on electricity produced by air- polluting coal.
